My impression is that the market is currently absorbing junior
writers first. Experienced writers, who know how to plan and
deliver a whole suite of product documentation, aren't in demand
because nobody is coding new software right now. A lot of the
advertised jobs are for odds-and-ends, SOP, retrenching, and
cleanup types of documentation -- they are happy hiring junior
folks for that. And it doesn't always help to offer to work for
less.
A lot of IT work right now is infrastructure projects, which
aren't productized in the same way as a new application or
enterprise server, and therefore tend not to be well documented.
Six months from now, look for a lot of ads that say "We hired
somebody to install our network and now we need somebody to
document it...VISIO REQUIRED"
Regards,
Mike O.
