I would guess that this dates from the days when books
were in hard-copy print and only the software itself was
online. I would be surprised if they are referring to
online documentation.

Parentheses might be confusing. I've seen the TM included in
square brackets or (more frequently) in superscript, <sup>TM</sup>
or, even fancier, <small><sup>TM</sup></small>. There is also a
registered trademark mark in HTML ®
