Yes and no.Your comments are well taken.
However, my point wasn't that the various media I mentioned were identical to on-line viewing. Rather, I was trying to stress that there was little in on-line fonts that was unique, and (even more importantly) that typography has a long history of adjusting to different constraints.
Your division into "context" and "medium" is a good way of describing those constraints, by the way.
