As a writer, I take pride in creating my own resume, as it not only gives me
a chance to write what someone else referred to as
"self-marketing-material", I would think that it would also be more
impressive to the person looking at your resume; especially if you're
applying for a writing position. Also, I've helped too many family members,
distant relations and friends create/update their resumes, so I can't get
myself to pay someone else for a service that I provide to others at no
charge.
In regards to recruiters, unfortunately (or fortunately ;)), I've got all my
jobs through recruiters. Recruiters help dissolve that line between
"following-up" and "being a pain" to the posting employer. They don't mind
being the pain because they're getting paid well for it. Also, if you have
a good relationship with the recruiter, they will sell you better than you
could yourself. And recruiters always keep their ears to ground, and often
have leads that never get posted. I say use them if you can. That is if
you trust them enough to negotiate $$ for you.
