It's not an industry-wide study, but Karen Schriver did some studies that
are included in her book, Dynamics in Document Design. She make distinctions
between cover-to-cover readers, last-resort readers, and so on. My notes on
this are that in Schriver's study 92% of consumers who bought a VCR reported
using the manual at some point.
