Ganesh Kabadi asked about CVS as a "best practice".
CVS and RCS are great tools available on *nix systems. However, since you mentioned that you were writing in Word, Visual Source Safe will probably be available an your system. It works fine with docs.
Whether or not it is "best practice" can be argued over as much as any other Microsoft product.
