Assuming you're documenting a check box, MS MoS would suggest:

"Ensure that the Display check box is selected or cleared, as
required."

If you have to document how to select or clear a check box, the same
style guide suggests "click" and recommends against "click on" or "click
at," while allowing "click in a window." IOW, "Click the Display check
box to select it or clear it."

The current guide has a sentence,
"Ensure that Display is checked, or click on it
to clear it, as required"

However, I am not sure if I am taking the right
approach with this. Any advice will be highly
appreciated.
