Word 97 styles not updating when attaching template

Does anyone have this problem in Word 97? I checked the archives and didn't
find it listed.
I attach a template to a document and check the box to automatically update
styles, but the styles do not update! The template attaches, and the new
styles are listed, but I have to go in and manually apply the styles. The
names of the styles in the template and the document are the same but their
attributes are different. I don't remember having this problem using Word
2000.
