Steve does have a method that he swears works. And several other people
on the Word list anyway assure us that Master Documents work just fine for
them, even without Young Goodman Hudson's magic.
However, as far as I can tell, the method requires you to plan ahead very
thoroughly and never swerve from your original outline or organizational
plan. I don't know how this would work if you are picking up a legacy
document that is already out of hand. It doesn't seem (to me) to be
possible--but I've been wrong before.
I haven't looked at Jean's books, but I'm a big fan of RD fields :) and
from my experience, I'd say stay well away from Master Docs. When things
go wrong, they go really most sincerely wrong. Text and graphics vanish
without a trace. It's ugly. Run away!
I also suspect the secret to handling large docs in Word is to go slow, save often, and avoid complicated formatting. But who knows.
