You don't mention how graphics intensive or lengthy your documents will be.
PageMaker is a mature page layout program that is at its best with graphics
and color intensive documents such as brochures and advertising. Many folks
use it for books and even newspapers, though. It comes with a table add-in
which is horrible, at best. It does reasonably well with long documents as
long as you keep your styles clean and do not do things which might corrupt
the file.

If you think you might have need to learn page layout using Quark or
InDesign in the future, PM might be worth your while to learn. It does
handle quite differently from Word or Frame.
