Hi Ilona --

I've been using Visual Source safe (VSS) for several years. It's
pretty easy to use (saved me several times!) and runs on both
Windows and several flavors of Unix platforms. At one time,
there was a Mac version, too, but I don't know if it still
exists. Around here we use it mostly for software. I'm the only
one who uses it for docs, too. The one drawback is that it can't
do a difference between Word docs. I don't know if VSS can do
automatic backups, since I never needed that feature. Seems to
me you shouldn't have something checked out for very long,
especially if you work in a group.
