I, too, have 512Mb and still encounter problems
with Word crashing. Especially when working with
"legacy" documents of over 100 pages. It has helped
stability when working with shorter, graphics-
intensive documents.
Memory can help alleviate some Word problems, but it
can't fix the buggy code.

Subject: RE: WORD issue solved
No, I have 512Mb of RAM and I still manage to make Word crash. I suppose
that this problem is relative to the size of the document, because Word
feels the need to write everything to RAM when printing. I can't print my
document because my PC is limited to 512Mb of RAM and Word needs more than
that when printing. I usually print the document in 50 page increments, or
convert to PDF to avoid the problem.
It would be nice if the problem could be fixed by throwing more money (RAM)
at it, but none-the-less, I don't think it can be.
