Yes, it is mostly a matter of opinion, but it certainly helps if your opinion matches the MS Manual of Style--it makes for a more compelling argument. :)

By the way, the MS MoS used to say "select" is for radio buttons, list items, and the like--controls that modify actions yet to be taken--while "choose" is for buttons, menu commands, and other controls that actually do something.

For example, in a Print dialog box you would *select* the Print All Pages option and *choose* OK.
