Which serif? Which sans serif? Under what conditions? With what leading? At what size?There are so many variables that a general statement is meaningless.
When I do evaluate fonts for general readability, I'm more apt to look at features such as even strokes and large, rounded bowls than whether the font is serif or sans serif.
