For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I had a similar situation when worked for a company that made the same
product for several operating systems.
We created special paragraph tags and used side heads in the FrameMaker
document to mark the OS-specific information. Each OS would have a
different paragraph tag with the OS name as an AutoNumber. The tag would be
placed in the side head next to the relevant procedure, so the user could
quickly scan down the page and find the correct spot.
It looked something like this:
Windows XXXXXXX
Unix XXXXXXX
Hope this helps,
Dave Murray
