Do not use auto-numbering; use a combination of
SEQ fields and autotext. Be prepared to become
a numbering wiz!
In Word, choose Insert > Field and select the
Numbering group. The field you're interested in
is SEQ and if you say "use SEQ" (nicely) to
clippy, you'll get a help screen of switches
and options to use.
Basically, you set up named sequences for each
numbering system in your document, so you can
have named SEQ fields for first level steps,
substeps, figure numbers, table numbers, etc.
For recurring sequences, like steps, make sure
your create a number=1 and number=next field.
The SEQ field also allows you to specify number
format (1,2,3,... a,b,c,... I, II, III,...) and
a bunch of other stuff.
Once you have your numbering fields created,
save them as autotext (Insert > Autotext >
New) I usually give them names like:
1 for restart number steps
2 for continue number steps
a for restart number substeps
b for continue number substeps
figno for continuous figure numbers
...and so on.
Format your step paragraphs with hanging indents,
but no numbers. When you get to a new step sequence,
format your para as a step, type 1, press F3, type
text, hit return, *type 2, press F3, type text, hit
return, REPEAT from * until done.
Using this technique, you can easily insert
substeps, notes, blocks of code, figures,
and other stuff between numbered steps and
still keep a consistent numbering scheme
going. When you add a step in the middle, just
update the fields and all the numbers fall into
place.
Steve ain't the only one, y'know! ;-)

No thanks. A nice bottle of Asti, though... <g>
I have turned off all autonumbering...
