RE: Question about sending one's resume to companies

Karen, et al
It has been quite clear to me (from Karen's message and
others) that the primary objection from hiring managers is
to resumes/letters/messages that show no evidence of having
taken any interest in the company, its products and goals.
There may be an American cultural bias here, but hiring
managers in this country aren't going to search through a
resume looking for what is relevant. They expect the applicant
to _at least_ point out what should matter most. Applicants (or
supplicants in the case of unsolicited material) who do not
do at least that much self-marketing will lose out to
applicants who make the effort.
Exception: If resumes are scanned by machines looking for
key words and phrases, resumes with the most hits may come to
the top of the pile without the marketing twist. However, that
marketing won't hurt when the hiring manager gets to review
things in detail.
