TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
In the past few years, I have noticed a remarkable amount of companies (both large and small) changing from separate Documentation Groups to placing those groups under Marketing. When I worked in one very large company, they had a separate documentation group but it was clear that marketing "held the reins" on documentation content. That created some rather interesting clashes between Engineering and Marketing. I'm working in another, even larger corporation now and our group is under, guess who...Marketing. To partially answer one of your questions, here we create what is called a "Client Manual" that consists of a Marketing Overview and certain sections of a Operating or Maintenance manual that is not sensitive to internal needs, in other words, that everyone can see. The other stuff is kept in the internal documents.
