"Bill Wild" <haycrest -at- hotmail -dot- com> asked:

What's the best way to
control versions with Word?

(He's looking to comply with ISO document management standards.)

Bill,

The company I work for (one of the largest consulting companies in the world -- impressive, huh?) is using Microsoft SharePoint to comply with ISO document sharing and version control standards. You can use any of a variety of version control and document management tools to share documents for ISO compliance. We are using SharePoint because it is relatively cheap and has a web-based user interface. Many other products have similar features and benefits.

My division produces a lot of reports but doesn't have to manage source code or anything like that, so we really only need to manage Word files and PDFs. However, if your company already uses a source code management tool for software development like StarTeam or PVCS, such a tool can also be used for document management. I have used both with much success, although not in an ISO context.

Good luck!

Regards,

Dawson
