And the more you know about scripting and programming, the better off you are in the SoftWare/HardWare kingdom. Or at least that has been my experience. It's sort of like going to a foreign countery and bothering to learn to say please, thank you, and where's the bathroom in the native tongue. The locals appreciate the effort more than you could imagine.
My experience is the same. And, to carry the analogy further, the locals appreciate the effort even if you're not very experienced. So few tech-writers can read code at all that you're a rarity for even trying.
Writers who complain about a lack of respect from SMEs, please take note.
