TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Started my college education as an English Major...dropped out
- became an Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic... got bored
- became a Commercial/Instrument Pilot with Flight Instructor Rating...
Actually taught flying and aircraft maintenance concurrently for several
years and learned how to create and revise technical curriculum for a rather
diverse audience. I never though about it before but this was good training
for my eventual tech writer gig.
- Ran a Karate School for a year (long story - don't ask)
- Went back to college (finally) as a business major - studied IT and
Marketing..
Undergrad degree in Marketing and Grad certificate in Database Development.
Still in school (will be forever probably)
In my last job I was a Field Service Engineer/Technical Support Specialist
flying all over the US and Canada (sometimes in rental aircraft) installing
Automated Fuel Systems as airports (little ones) and marinas. I was involved
in tech support, , technician training, documentation, interface design,
product testing (usually over the phone with customers), and eventually,
full-time Technical Writing. It was truly being thrown in the deep end with
no life jacket and I loved it (until I didn't). I also got to design and
implement the company website and most all product manuals and graphics.
Once I learned what people with my talents were making elsewhere, I moved
on.
Still looking for that next "flying/tech writer" gig.
