Perhaps you only erred in assuming that this excuse was real. The company may just be giving you a standard excuse. The reality may be that the company has decided not to hire anyone, and doesn't want the fact generally known for some reason. For example, perhaps the company doesn't have the budget for a writer, and is worried that admitting the fact would make the company look as though it were in financial difficulties.

Personally, I try not to worry too much about why I don't get a job. I've heard too many bizaare excuses and been turned down in too many unusual circumstances.
What matters is that you didn't get the job. Nothing else is really important..
