Re: Document Size and Page Numbers
Actually, automatic page numbering has been a feature of most word processors, all the way back to Wordstar days. How it's implemented has changed over the years, but for the most part it's been relatively easy to implement either by-chapter page numbering or straight-through page numbering. Figuring out how THIS package implements it, as opposed to THAT package, has been the challenge. <g>IMHO, chapter-specific numbering is a holdover from the days where we
didn't have automatic page numbering. It made it easier to make small
revisions in large documents, as you had to renumber only a few pages up
to the start of the next chapter, not everything up to the end of the
document.
The overriding reason for preferring by-chapter page numbering is so that manuals could be selectively updated without having to reprint the whole book. When it was believed that users preferred to handle updates by pulling and inserting specific sections, having to replace just this or that chapter was far better than replacing the entire book. To a large extent, that mindset still exists in situations where the manuals are very large, in a three-ring binder, or more often used in paper versions rather than online versions. However there are now many justifications for using straight-through page numbering, probably the most prevalent one being where the documentation is released online and customers are asked to download and print the parts that they want (e.g., Sun).
