One great bit of advice I heard last fall from Linda Oestrich, a tech
writer, author, and active STC fellow:

If you spend all of your networking time within your own industry group,
then when there is a downturn in that industry you'll be standing together
in the same line at the unemployment office.

Do some of your networking laterally. For example, if you are a writer,
visit local meetings of graphics designers or programmers or engineers.
Instead of being one of a score of writers in a meeting, you can be the only
writer in the meeting.
