I think it's an English thing, though, because a lot of languages do have
standards bodies that rule on spellings, admissible words, and whether words
should or shouldn't be in dictionaries.

Russian went through a significant spelling reform in the early twentieth
century, for example, and I believe German did too at some point. There are
also plenty of jokes about the Academie Francaise ruling on whether to allow
"le hamburger", "le cover-girl" and "le pipeline" (pronounced, allegedly,
"le peepleen" or else it's not allowed).

Trying to find a standards body to do the same for English worldwide seems a
little more problematic, to put it mildly. Never mind harmonising and
organising, there's colo(u)r and hono(u)r, grey and gray...and then you get
to grammar differences!

After a few more attempts at explaining, it finally
dawned on me that he believed that just one spelling ought to be ruled as
being correct, and any others removed from the dictionary! I understood a
lot better what he was trying to achieve in the standards after that :-)
