About 11:30 this morning, I was walking back down the hall from the coffeemaker, when I spotted an IT guy who used to work here. We had laid him off in a RIF, through no fault of his own; and he was just stopping in to say hello. This is a guy who always has a broad smile on his face, this time being no exception, and he assured me he wasn't armed ;-)
Now put yourself in his shoes. This is a young guy with several kids. He had closed on a new house a week before the RIF. His attitude at the time was that this would give him time to work on the house. His attitude now, several months later and still unemployed, is that this is a great opportunity to expand his skills. His alma mater offered a discount on a continuing ed program, and he just signed up to take courses to become an Oracle DBA. He figures that a $6,000 student loan will do the trick, and he'll have several years to pay it back.
Could YOU maintain that positive an attitude in his situation? I sure couldn't!
