If you're not sure you can give exactly the same test under exactly the same
circumstances to ALL applicants, you could be sued for discrimination. We
used to give such a test at one company I worked at, and HR made us stop
for that very reason. There ARE other ways to determine a writer's
competence. I like to be able to go over the person's samples with them and
ask questions about those samples. That can be very revealing. I also like
to ask whether they'd like to see/try the product they'll be documenting.
Likewise revealing.
One place I interviewed asked me to write (in longhand) an essay about a
topic irrelevant to technical communication (or even to technology). That
was too much! Years later, I met the HR guy who had to administer the test,
and he said it even embarrassed him.
But we've hashed out all this stuff too many times. Bottom line, we all make
mistakes; if we're good, we learn from them.
