When the pointy-haired boss comes along and announces that certain people are not to be disturbed under any circumstances, just smile and say: "Thanks for the tip" and blatantly, categorically, dismiss anything that person said.

Don't talk to the SMEs is like telling me not to breath.

As I mentioned in my post about the techwr-l poll, we had been band from talking directly to the programmers. One of the outcomes of this policy was that we had to go through the programmer manager.....who tended to run away every time he saw us. He turned around and ducked into the bathroom one time while we were just walking down the hall on our way to lunch!
