Anyone with half a brain and some ability to organize
info can write a half-way decent procedure or chunk of
prose. A writing test will only tell you that the
candidate isn't brain dead. The REAL test of a tech
writer is the ability to handle situations and get
information, either out of people or from technical
papers. This is how my line of questioning usually
follows (both as interviewer and interviewee).
No matter which side of the desk you're sitting on in
an interview, you must be prepared. You should do your
homework. Learn as much about the candidate or company
ahead of time and ask very specific, intelligent,
pertinent questions when you come face to face.
