Hi,
Relax, this happens all the time. Oooooommmmmm. Ooooommmmm. Zen your
way through their ignorance.
Now, the minimum left hand margin for 3-hole (1/4 inch) drilled paper
is recommended to be 7/8 ths of an inch or the metric equivalent (in
Quebec). Include the holes within that measure. Make it an even inch
if the holes are 3/8ths inch in diameter. That should be enough to
hold the paper in the rings well enough to resist tears from frantic
page turning.
For the most practical measures consult a professional printer.
They've been working with this material for hundreds of years and
they have accrued an enormous wealth of information about paper and
what's printed on it. An alliance with a printer will be good for you.
As far as their 'tweaking', have a look at their results and yours
side-by-side. Critique the results and present the pros and cons to
your superior. It sounds like the document length will double and
perhaps triple with the newspaper-width column. Are both sides of the
page being used? Wide margins are easier to use for notes but they
aren't necessary if the facing page is blank, for example.
In the end, use whatever they want. It's their nickel. If they can't
see the difference between your results, theirs, and others' that you
use for argument; take it in stride or start planning your escape.
TIP: Keep samples for your future seminars and workshops. :-)

Nothing is useless. It can always be used as a bad example.
