TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The first time was at a local now-defunct software company. I forget what it
was they wanted me to do--I want to say write instructions for a sundae--and
I was given a pencil and paper and left alone for some time to do it. I went
back to the tester to ask about my audience (i.e., do they know what ice
cream and hot fudge are? Do they WANT a sundae, or do I have to tell them
how good it it is? etc.) They said that no-one had ever asked before, and
weren't sure what assumptions I could make. That was not good, IMO.
I was brought back in for a "real" interview, but not hired because
apparently I came across as "arrogant". I didn't think I was, but I suppose
that if that was their perception, I wouldn't have fit in...
2nd time, I was asked to write a short instruction for some on-line help. I
was offered the job, but decided not to take it.
