Subject:a consensus on time in Europe From:"Elizabeth OShea" <Elizabeth -dot- OShea -at- emergesmart -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 22 May 2002 16:04:24 +0100
Hi all -
Thank you to everyone who responded. My company's style guide is much better
for it!
The consensus seems to be that
--only English speakers use a 12-hour clock (how did that come about, I
wonder?)
--everyone understands 14:34
--it is best to write 08:45, even in body text. Including the 0 lets the
reader know that the time is expressed with a 24-hour clock and the writer
did not accidentally leave out the AM/PM (or am/pm, or, my _Little, Brown
Handbook_ tells me, a.m/p.m in the US)
As per Jan's suggestion, I will use my operating system as a reference in
future. I wish I had thought of that!
