Re: Reporting indecent spam
$You get spam because you use a Hotmail account. Try this: Create a new
$Hotmail account and don't use it at all. Don't tell anybody. Spam will
$gush in within a few days.
Well, maybe not pour in, but you are right. Spam will start to show up in the inbox.
I have three hotmail accounts, two of which have very narrow circualtion. The only one of the three that doesn't collect spam is the one set to reject all messages unless the sender is in the address book.
The one I used to post this message has spam filtering set to high, but I still get a hefty pile of spam.
Spammers (it's tempting to say spam whores, but I won't) have lots of ways to get e-mail addresses.
One of the common ones is harvesting e-mail addresses from Usenet newsgroups. And this list is mirrored to the Usenet news group 'bit.listserv.techwr-l'. Unfortunately, this list doesn't allow the common tactic in most Usenet newsgroups of altering one's e-mail address to foil spam harvesting, like posing under nospamplease -at- lukewarmmail -dot- com -dot-
So, if you don't want spam, post using an account from a free e-mail service like hotmail, set the filtering to only allow e-mail from people in the address book.
