I've been reading the posts about the job market for tech writers with great
interest--it looks as though things are consistently rough across the U.S.
Here in the area of Provo/Orem (Novell country and the home of the now
defunct WordPerfect Corp.) and Salt Lake City, Utah, I 've watched in the
past year as many highly experienced, very technically skilled writers get
laid off, be unemployed for nearly a year, and then have to take drastic
cuts in pay. (I should probably point out that many of these folks want to
stay in the area and so are willing to do this.) At least in Provo and Orem,
the software sector is a real employer's market right now--you can get
experienced people for a song here right now, and the contractors I know are
struggling.

When a tech writing job is posted, companies get so many applicants that it
takes 4 to 8 weeks to get through all the resumes and then arrange for
interviews. My husband, a currently unemployed IT manager, is experiencing
the same in his line of work.

It's been very disheartening to watch, and yes, I am extremely grateful to
have a job right now!
