I was using FrameMaker, WordStar, and WordPerfect in DOS before I was
using MS Word. I was using Mac OS, DOS, and GEM before I used Windows.
How and why did I get my start on MS Word?
At version 2.0, Word was available on the Mac and in Windows. Word was
available in Windows while WordPerfect remained in DOS. Word provided a
slicker GUI than DOS-based apps, and DOC files were more easily shared
with other apps in Windows and on the Mac, than were DOS apps. Oh, and
it was my employer's decision <vbg>.
By the time WordPerfect for Windows 6.0 came out, that buggy release
really was a distant third to MS Word and Ami Pro.
Why Word today? It's interaction with the office suite and the ubiquity
of filters for it, along with the fact that it's pretty much included
with your computer purchase keeps it on my desktop. I actually also have
a SmartSuite license at home, but I don't use it much.

Microsoft could very easily make a decision to improve the interface of
MS Word. In fact, one person on this list hopes to use some of the
comments in this thread to persuade Microsoft to do so.
