TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Sorry Keith, no secret handshakes (AFAIK); you should just expect that
friendly phone call from the President of the local chapter suggesting
you
might want to volunteer for some chapter job, "now you are so
experienced"!

David Farbey,
another "I've-never-had-my-back-stabbed" STC Senior Member
and Co-Editor of STC UK Chapter Newsletter (they got me!)
Thanks David for the comments. I suppose that I "got" myself! I've found
that the STC membership was the single most important step I made in
establishing myself in the position. Just by starting to ask a few
questions around Denmark where I am based last August when I joined, I
now find myself the founder, webmaster, and acting president of
STC-Nordic, a fledgling STC chapter encompassing Norway, Sweden,
Finland, and Denmark. We're hoping to mirror the success of our
colleagues in the TransAlpine chapter where I "caught the bug" for STC
last November. In my experience, the opportunities for
"cross-fertilization" and professional support far outweigh any possible
pettiness that any less-than-professionally minded individual might
exercise.
Just the view from Copenhagen,
