Side-heads in OpenOffice (was RE: Side-heads in Word?

Is anybody currently doing a side-head layout
in OpenOffice 1.x or StarOffice 6.x ??
Any issues, tips, tricks?
Early on (before release 1.0) I tried it,
and got the appearance, but wasn't getting
the headings properly gathered for the ToC,
so I went with a full-column layout instead,
in the interest of getting the product out.
I'm thinking of trying again. Any pioneers
care to ease the path for the rest of us?
Is that an arrow in your butt? :-)
