Yabbut - Word can do sideheads just fine. All you do is, as several others
have pointed out, create 2-column tables with one cell in the margin and the
other lined up with your text.

Works fine, and I don't consider this a kludge, rather a way of using the
tool's strengths.

Afterthought:

Taking FrameMaker with sideheads to Word, use Mif2Go, an awesome tool.
It will fake sideheads, I think, by using text boxes. Check it out!
However, I still recommend a doc redesign to accommodate your tools
strenghts.
