TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
>I stick to my guns: pictographs of various sorts are highly subjective, and
>thus, their meanings must be learned. The same is true of words, but we have
>tools (dictionaries and editors) for helping us to use words consistently;
>we lack such tools for graphics, despite efforts by luminaries such as
>Jacques Bertin to develop a visual grammar.
You guys have to stop tempting me into these discussions.
In this case I'll simply say that at the current state of the western
graphical glossary, I feel that graphics supports text and only the
simplest (and primarily physical) instructions can depend solely or
even primarily on graphics.
Having said that, I will remind you that I live in the Boston area.
This area has some of the strangest road signs.
A local webmeister has assembled a collection of road signs, confusing
and amusing. Some foreign doozies are included.
I have seen many of these, including the ! -at- * sign on the home page and
the third and sixth sign in exhibit 6.
