The most bothersome aspect of Rob's anecdote is that the person didn't know what siloed meant and was still using it. Now, I'm not saying that this doesn't happen on a regular basis. But man, if you're going to be inventing new uses for words, at least get a grip on how you're using it!!! ;-)
Dick.....how the heck did you know that???
As far as buzzwords go, I'm getting REALLY sick of xtreme!!!
On a related note, speaking in a linguistic sense, I believe changing nouns to verbs is one of the most common causes for language change. It's been a while since I've looked at historical linguistics, but I think that's right. Anyway, it's certainly rife in the business world, no matter what the purpose of it is.
This reminds of an episode of the Simpsons where a marketer was rattling off a bunch of buzzwords, and a writer responded something like "Proactive. Ellucidate. Aren't those just buzzwords that dumb people use to make themselves sound smarter...I'm fired, aren't I?"
"Whatever you do, do NOT let your editorial decisions be made by the squiggly spell-checking lines in Word!" ~Keith Cronin, Techwr-l irritant ;-)
