Yes, France has introduced the 35 hour working week.
BUT, unless you work in a large company (e.g. VW, Renault) or in a government one, you are expected to work the former 40 hour working week at least. This is very true in the software and telco industries where competition and times are hard (I am a former WorldCom employee...). This is also due to a number of cultural issues also mentioned in the thread: "presenteeism", "self-victimization", "paternalism", etc. These come certainly from the "start-up" culture.
BTW, the French law has been modified so that, for most people, working time is measured in days per year, instead of hours per week. What is a working day then, or a week ?
I will try hard to work the way Keith Cronin does. That is the only method to find the right balance between satisfaction at work and happiness at home.
