Bryan,

Don't get hung up on job titles. Until Everyone (with
a capital E) agrees on the standard responsibilities
of an "Information Architect" or "Communication
Specialist" or "Senior Documentation Specialist,"
we're all still technical writers. (Not that that's a
bad thing!)

When I first joined a large company a few years ago, I
was impressed that my boss was a "vice president,"
impressed until I realized that there were probably
hundreds of middle managers with the same title.

Given the ambiguity of job titles, I replace
non-standard job titles on my resume with "technical
writer" and let the meat of my resume describe my
experience and skills.

As to salary, that's always tough. I'd take a close
look at what other tech writers with the same
responsibilities earn via salary surveys and
Monster/HotJobs listings.

Steven Brown
Senior Technical Writer...or am I?
