Well, I guess it depends on how you want/expect to live. I live in Seattle
on 35K. I don't have a family, but I live alone, and I'm paying to go to
school at night out of it. As someone (was it Andrew?) said earlier, it
might not buy a Lexus and waterfront home in Kirkland, but I certainly don't
consider myself on the poverty line either.

It depends where you live. I've lived in some areas where $40K would buy a
nice home and feed a family with money left over. However, if you are
talking Silicon Valley or Seattle (and Diane was, IIRC) $40K is less than a
pittance. You can't live on it, let alone support a family.
