I'm pretty good with a butter knife, but don't really get what this
brain surgery thing is all about. I am teaching a live demo and seminar
and would appreciate it if you guys could tell me about these things.
ROFLMAO!!
Really, tech writing is not brain surgery. But, you have to have a clue.
Experience is also pretty valuable. I agree, you teach best what you
want to learn, but only when building on top of experience. Let's say
you've used XYZ tool to do your job for 5 years and are giving a seminar
on it. Maybe you need to learn those aspects of the tool you don't use
day-in and day-out, to cover your bases. This is the kind of learning
that by learning about these extended features, and then teaching the
class, your knowledge of your subject will grow constructively. I
disagree that, if you have zero understanding and zero experience, then
you can teach best what you learn.

You teach best what you most need to learn. When the teacher is
ready, the students appear.
Let's see, we go to church to listen to a person instruct us in
spiritual things, that very frankly,
they don't completely understand themselves.
Then we go to seminars on stock market strategies and --- ditto.
Then we go to therpists --- ditto.
Then we go to knowledge management consultants and --- ditto.
It does seem that a three-hype seminar is a little bit too much.
Or maybe they could pile it on, add VOIP, wireless internet,
and lunar exploration.
