I'm truly astounded by some of the replies on the "Drafts" thread. What
amazes me is the acquiescence shown by some people (not everyone) to the
idea that one must please the boss at all costs.
He/She who signs the checks makes the rules. Been that way since just about the
time apes grew thumbs.
This is an oversimplification with limit usefullness.
First of all, you should say "...makes some of the rules". You cannot flog your employees, you cannot elect not to pay them (except in very limited circumstances), etc. etc. In other words: The employer-employee relationship is embedded in an external framework of overriding rules.
Even within this framework, it is misleading to say that the employer makes the rules. This may be so some of the time, perhaps even most of the time. But he/she who really makes the rules is the one with more economic power. At times, this is the employee, and in these times, the employee pretty much gets to make the rules. (Of course within external limits, as above.)
