TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

This group is a marvelous resource! I have been lurking for some
time, as I am intending a change of career to some aspect of
Technical Communications.
As part of my career research (quite formal, because I am
applying for funding to further my education), I want to conduct
three or four informational interviews - a few employers and a
few TWs. Because I am reluctant to present myself as a novice in
my own backyard (B.C. Interior), I want to interview firms
outside my region.
I have a couple of "newbie" questions for the group.
1. Will a brief email enquiry, including my nine (mostly yes/no)
questions get any response? I.e. would the employers you're
familiar with consider this just a nuisance and delete it? I plan
to follow up any replies with a "thank you" telephone call.
2. Would anyone here mind answering a similar quick set of
questions for Technical Writers?
[I don't want to spam the group, so you can reply off list if you
prefer. mailto:writer -at- bcnexus -dot- com ]
My Funding Application, FYI, is to the Human Resources
Development Commission (Canada), who offer financial support to
those who are unemployed (me) or under-employed (also me!).
They'll pay tuition, fees, living expenses, etc. for qualified
applicants to upgrade skills and qualifications. The Application
process is formal and time consuming, but I hope it will get me a
TW Certificate and some mid-level training. So far, my App. runs
to over 100 pages - I should add it to my portfolio! ;-}
P.S. I am 49 years old and have been following the age
discrimination thread with interest <g>
