TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

Also, people don't stop to think that it is a labor of love (and love of
labor :-)) for many of us.>>
Nayanika,
Thanks for that. That is exactly how I feel. I love to write. I love technical writing and I love other types of writing too.
I have enjoyed the technical aspects of my job as well as the writing and communication aspects. Although I could switch to programming, I don't think I'd be as happy. I could also switch to Marcom or copywriting or copyediting or training. Although I plan on continuing to develop my creative writing and also in studying other languages, neither of those is a practical path to future gainful employment.
Since I enjoy technical writing, I hope to keep a hand in with it the rest of my life, even if I achieve success in other related fields.
I have managed a group of technical writers, and I also enjoyed that. As long as my job allows for a mixture of technology and communication, I will probably find satisfaction. The thing missing in managing is holding that doc in your hands and knowing "I made that!". I can hold many others' documents in my hands and think "I helped them make these!" but it is not exactly the same.
I have found that people whose values include "Those with the most toys when they die, win" don't exactly understand my work ethic, which is more than an ethic, but an actual enjoyment of working, producing, setting goals, and creating works of value within the world.
(Hence the most frustrating thing is having obstacles that I cannot remove being placed in the path of producing value....)
