You are both forgetting the OS/Software that makes Linux, Windows, and MacOSX as useful as they are: BSD
There are probably more tools/applications that run on BSD than any of the above three.
Nothing wrong with BSD. Some people say that it's more stable than Linux, although personally I haven't found much to choose between the two. Possibly, you have to be a hardcore developer to appreciate any differences.
And, yes, a lot of code from BSD has found its way into these other operating systems, especially OS X. Still more is shared between BSD, Os X and Linux from their common UNIX and GNU ancestory.
But, while I've heard the claim that BSD has more tools and applications, I've never heard how this is calculated or what figures are given; my exposure to the various flavours of BSD has been fairly casual. Do you have any figures?
Not that I'm doubting you - I'm just hoping to push the bounds of my ignorance a little further back.
