That said, I would walk into the room where the prototype
machines are tinkered with and query the room at large with,
"Okay, so which one can I break?"
As someone who has frequently worked as a contractor, I have tried similar tactics to this.
Another suggestion: Chocolate chip cookies. Take a plate of them into a room where this machine is being run. As the guys (invariably males in these rooms) chomp away, you start wandering. "Wow! What is this machine? Can I see you use it?"
Chocolate chips are great conversation starters.
