What are the rules for using 'proficiency in', 'proficiency with' and
'proficiency on'?
I did not find anything in the archives. Google returns 449,000, 51,800 and
14,600 hits respectively.
I'm comfortable saying 'proficiency in Java programming' (abstract noun) and
'proficiency with an electric pruner' (concrete noun). Is this the rule (use
'in' with abstract nouns and 'with' with concrete nouns)?
I'm ok with 'The Influence of Instructors' Computer Proficiency on
Achievement and Changes in
Student Attitudes...'. In this sentence, 'Instructors' Computer Proficiency'
can be replaced by 'X', so the relationship between 'proficiency' and 'on'
is not the question.
I won't have access to e-mail after tomorrow morning until Sunday evening.
Looking forward to your comments.
Thanks.
Mary
